Union Gospel Mission hosting 25th annual Easter brunch

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The pain of poverty can be especially hard on holidays.

The Union Gospel Mission is hosting its 25th annual Easter brunch.

Three-thousand pounds of ham, 4,200 buns and 675 apple pies will be served today.

UGM President Bill Mollard says that works out to about a pound of ham per person, but says it’s never just about the food. “The most important meal is the meal that we’re serving that day. Everyday we serve 1,000 meals. It’s about good nutrition, but it’s also about making a starting point where people say ‘hey I need to make some changes in my life and it looks like some people around here will help me.'”

Mollard adds that every year after one of these big meals a handful of people end up in their alcohol and drug recovery program.

Over 200 volunteers are helping out today as well.
