Hikers asked to help search for missing British tourist as trails open

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The North Shore backcountry trails officially open this weekend with a request from rescue crews to the public to help search for a missing British hiker last seen in November.

Tom Billings is believed to have gotten lost while hiking in the Lynn Headwaters area.

Doug Pope with North Shore Rescue says it’s finally clear of snow after being closed for the last eight months, “people are going to be going up into the area that we suspect Tom got lost and is likely still up there somewhere so we are asking people to look for any signs of Tom Billings.”

That means looking for his clothes or belongings. Billings was wearing a black jacket, grey military pants with brown hiking boots and was carrying a Nikon Coolpix camera.

“[The family] is not expecting a good outcome from this search but they are hoping to get closure and find out what happened. They actually came out from England about a month ago and met with the team and they are very thankful for what’s been done to search for him so far,” Pope adds.

He asks anyone going into the area near Haynes Valley and Crown Mountain to stay on trail as it is challenging terrain.

Anyone who has an info is asked to contact NSR or the Vancouver Police as soon as they can.
