Search called off for solo rower missing off northern Vancouver Island

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A search has ended off BC’s rugged west coast for a rower missing on a solo journey from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy, hundreds of kilometres to the south.

RCMP in Prince Rupert have now taken over the case as a missing persons file.

The unnamed rower, in his 70s, has not been seen since about halfway through his journey, when he left Aristazabal Island, about 225 kilometres north of Port Hardy.

The man, described as an experienced and well-equipped outdoorsman, was reported overdue on July 20, nine days later.

Since then, two military aircraft and several coast guard vessels have criss-crossed the entire search grid three times, without finding any trace of the man or his boat.

RCMP are still appealing for information from boaters who may have seen the man or a small rowboat in the area between the southern tip of Haida Gwaii and the northern edge of Vancouver Island any time after July 11.
