Most Canadians want marijuana legalized, but it’s not top priority: survey

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – When Marc Emery returns to Canada today after five years in a US prison, he’ll find our attitude towards pot has changed from when he went behind bars.

An Angus Reid Global survey has found 60 per cent of Canadians would like to see marijuana legalized. But those asked do not want the federal government to make it their top priority.

Shachi Kurl with the pollster says the survey found legalizing pot ranked fourth in terms of what people would like the government to focus on.

“Changing the laws in order to legalize marijuana, only 15 per cent said that this should be the top priority for government,” she tells us.

Kurl says 63 per cent wanted the government to concentrate on tougher penalties for those found guilty of serious crimes. Cracking down on white-collar criminals came in second place in the survey.

Meanwhile, the strongest support for legalizing pot comes from BC at 70 per cent, compared to the lowest in Alberta and in Quebec.
