VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Bowen Island woman’s decision to end her life as she battled dementia is re-igniting the conversation on assisted suicide.
Gillian Bennett, 85, took a pill to end her life on Monday in the latest high-profile case of a person choosing to end things on their own terms.
Ruth von Fuchs is with the Right to Die Society of Canada. She says the pressure is building for legal changes.
“Many people have said that as boomers age, the pressure will mount to the point where it finally accomplishes something because the people in the boomer generation are not accustomed to being told to shut up and sit down.”
This latest case comes as Gloria Taylor’s right to die case works its way through the Canadian Court system. Taylor was an ALS patient who launched a case to push for assisted suicide, but died in 2012.
