BC NDP leader pens letter to premier, calling efforts in teachers dispute a failure

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC’s Opposition leader is calling out Premier Christy Clark, saying she’s failing families by not diving in to the teachers’ dispute.

John Horgan has sent a letter to Clark, demanding she pull up a chair to the negotiating table.

He says the premier is more familiar with this dispute than the fight between the province and the truckers’ association, in which she helped broker a deal.

“I believe that the crisis was, in fact, manufactured 12 years ago, when Christy Clark was the minister of education. She ripped up collective agreements. The courts have found twice that she violated the chartered rights of teachers. They are appealing that, I understand that — that doesn’t resolve the issue.”

Horgan argues Clark talks about “Families First” but is ignoring families at every corner in this province. He says she needs to “stop tweeting and start the meeting.”

“What she should be doing is sitting at the table and working through the class size and class composition issues… teacher ratio issues… the whole host of issues that have been apparent to anyone who’s been paying attention for the past decade,” he adds.

Horgan adds he feels Education Minister Peter Fassbender has been an utter failure for a year now, and needs to step aside.
