Should Vancouver follow Victoria’s steps in lowering city speed limits?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Is the speed limit on Vancouver roads too high?

At least one doctor thinks so and, following a change to Victoria’s downtown speed limits, he’d like to see this city’s limit taken down a notch.

Victoria City Council voted in favour of the change earlier this summer; that change will see the limit on downtown streets taken down to 40km/h from the previous 50km/h.

Steve Wallace is the CEO of Wallace Driving School in Victoria. He thinks it’s worth a try in that city.

“At the beginning, I wasn’t really too keen on it, but when you look at the statistics of crash reductions and severity of crash reductions, it makes sense.”

Wallace says a survey of the current speeds in Vancouver might be a good first step here. “You may find the deferred speed and what people are going is already lower than… what the speed limit is set at.”

Dr. John Carsley with Vancouver Coastal Health wants to see a similar move in Vancouver. He’s been in touch with the city manager.

But past efforts haven’t been welcomed; a proposal was shot down by the mayors at the Union of BC Municipalities convention last year.
