Is there any truth to rumours that BC is moving towards privatizing education?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As the unrest in our public education system continues, there are suggestions on social media the province may be moving toward privatization.

It all started late last week, with some tweets from former BC Teachers’ Federation president Susan Lambert.

She wrote on Friday that there was a rumour that three tiers of “sweeping changes” to the School Act were coming and that Premier Christy Clark would announce the changes on September 23rd.

Without saying where she was hearing this, Lambert posted a second tweet, saying the changes would include a $6,000 voucher for academic students and trades training for others.

Lambert’s last tweet admits there needs to be corroboration of the rumour.

We asked the government if there is anything behind the rumours, and it says, “No way.”

In an e-mail, Clark’s press secretary Sam Oliphant says there is “simply no truth to anything in those tweets.”

We have tried to get in touch with Lambert and have not received a response.
