Many people relieved to hear a tentative deal has been reached in the teachers dispute

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s a big sense of relief this morning, with word of a tentative deal reached between the BCTF and the government.

The agreement was reached around 4 a.m. today and came to a complete surprise to early risers we spoke with.

One woman who has a son who was supposed to start Grade 12 three weeks ago tells us she is interested to see what is in the deal. “I hope everyone is happy with it. I hope it is not just something to get the kids back to school, but it is going to benefit the kids.”

“I am glad to see the kids are getting back to school,” a father says. “My other kids are just wasting their time playing video games when they shouldn’t be. Negotiations take a long time. Everybody has to push their own position so it affects everybody. But it went on as long it needed to go on, I guess, to come to a good deal for both sides.

“I think it’s great that they’ll go back to work and the kids will go back to school. It’s about time. [Sounds like] both sides got what they wanted,” says one early riser.

When asked whether he thought it took too long to get to this point, he said “Way too long, on both sides.”

“I’m very happy to hear it. The main reason is the kids need to get back to school. It’s been three weeks. I can imagine the strain on the parents and the strain on the children, as well,” says another morning commuter.
