Arrh, matey: It’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Happy September 19th — It’s time to party like a pirate and pillage the English language!

Founded by two men now known around the Seven Seas simply as Cap’n Slappy and Ol’ Chumbucket, International Talk Like a Pirate Day has been widely celebrated since 2002.

How do you talk like a pirate? Cap’n Slappy and Ol’ Chumbucket say it’s all about using the five A’s!

“We calls ’em that because there’s five of ’em… and they begins with the letter A,” quip the salty seadogs, in their online instructional video.

“The first one is a little word we like to call ‘ahoy’… translated into landlubber lexicon, that means ‘hello,'” says Mr. Slappy.

The second word is “avast,” as in to stand and give attention.

“You might use it when yer sittin’ in a bar, as we often do, and you see a beautiful well-endowed woman walk in. You might say ‘Avast! Get a load of the bowsprit on that proud beauty. AVAST! ” adds Mr. Chumbucket.

The third word is “aye,” which translates as “yes I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did.”

“The fourth A is ‘aye aye.’ It sounds just like ‘aye’ … but  there are two of ’em!” says the good Cap’n.

Of course, the final word is the most important in the pirate language… “Aaaaaarrrrrrrhh!”

“Arrrh is a flexible word. It can mean anything ya wants it to mean,” he explains.

“It can mean ‘my team is winning,’ it can mean ‘my team is losing,’ it can mean ‘I’m enjoying this beverage.'”

“I would like a muffin!” chimes in Chumbucket.

“It can mean I’m here and alive!” they both add.

If you throw the those five ‘A’s into your conversation today, you’ll have all the pirate talk you’ll need.
