Surrey mayoral candidate unveils extensive crime-fighting plan

SURREY (NEWS1130) – A Surrey mayoral candidate is touting a $21-million plan that she claims will help reduce crime in that city and make people feel safer.

Linda Hepner says through growth alone, the city makes up to $6 million a year and that money over four years will fund a plan that includes a new mental health facility, a specialized court and more police officers.

“I want to attract young Surrey citizens as recruits and those young officers, when they graduate, I’d like to see them home again.”

In total, Hepner would bring in 147 new Mounties and 100 of them would be hired within the first two years, should she be elected.

“We’ve done a good job of managing our city’s finances over the past nine years, so we’re in a good position to afford the increase in police officers.”

Her competition Barinder Rasode feels Hepner is just throwing around a lot of numbers. “I welcome new officers to the City of Surrey, however, we can’t wait and that’s why I proposed an alternate plan that would have boots on the ground immediately. The plan I’ve put in place would be able to be implemented within the existing revenues of the City of Surrey.”

A recent Insights West poll found more than half the people who live in Surrey feel crime is the biggest issue, while nearly half believe the level of crime in their neighbourhood has increased over the past five years.

The civic election is Saturday, November 15th. News1130 will have full coverage both on-air and online.
