Whitecaps eliminated from playoffs with loss to FC Dallas

FRISCO, TX (NEWS1130) – Vancouver defender Kendall Waston was whistled for a handball in the box in the 83rd minute, and Michel scored on the ensuing penalty kick, as FC Dallas beat the Whitecaps 2-1 in the MLS Western Conference knockout round.

The loss eliminates Vancouver from the post-season. Dallas moves on to face Seattle in the two-leg Western Conference semi-final.

Vancouver fell behind 1-0 late in the first half. Dallas broke free on a two-on-one rush, and Tesho Akindele shot from the right side of the box, across goal. The ball hit Vancouver defender Andy O’Brien and deflected in.

The Whitecaps pulled even in the 64th minute on a set piece. The free kick into the box was cleared out by Dallas, but the ball was put back in and rattled around before Erik Hurtado was able to put it in the net to make it 1-1.

The home side went ahead for good with under 10 minutes to play. A ball deflected off a Dallas player and then got a piece of the right arm of Waston at the top of the box. The referee awarded a PK to Dallas in a controversial decision, which led to the winning goal. Michel fired a shot to the left side of the net, as David Ousted dove the other way.

The Whitecaps are now 0-2 in MLS playoff appearances. They lost to the LA Galaxy in the knockout round in 2012.
