David Suzuki makes appearance at Burnaby Mountain protest

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Kinder Morgan protesters had a surprise appearance on Burnaby Mountain today by environmentalist David Suzuki.

He says he has been at a conference in Malaysia and he came to the mountain one day after returning to Canada.

Suzuki says what’s taking place on the mountain is considered Liquified Frack Gas and calls it the most “nutty” way to get energy. “We need a discussion about what the heck is going on in terms of the reality of climate change and the need to do something before we start these multi-billion dollar enterprises. It’s just crazy!”

He adds what’s happening in Burnaby is a worldwide issue. “Why should a Texas-based company be telling us they’re going to drill into areas like this, even just for exploration, when we haven’t even decided what our national energy policy is? This is nuts!”

Over 400 people gathered on the mountain protesting the surveying work that’s being done by Kinder Morgan.

Roughly 45 of those people loaded a school bus in Victoria and brought supplies to the site.

Jeff was among the group and echoes Suzuki’s statements that this is a global crisis. “We’re actually creating a demand that this economy we have, which doesn’t acknowledge any limits to growth, keeps pushing against the biosphere which does have limits to growth. It’s just a disaster that’s happening.”

The group brought sleeping bags, blankets, tarps, food and camping equipment.

In total, over 60 protesters have been arrested on Burnaby Mountain since Thursday.

Over ten people were arrested today. An 11-year-old girl and her mother crossed the police line and were escorted off the mountain.
