Coast Mountain Bus company investigates after possible assault

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A bus driver reportedly involved in a fight with a passenger at a bus loop in Burnaby yesterday has been charged with assault causing bodily harm.

Nathan Woods with the Bus Drivers Union says the driver has 25 years experience and has never been involved in a situation like this.

“I do know that if there is some sort of violence or erratic behaviour there are other people at the bus loop. This person did show some pretty egregious behaviour.”

The Coast Mountain Bus Company is doing its own investigation into what happened at Lougheed Station.

Witnesses say the driver assaulted a young man as he ran up and knocked on the door to get in. But the union representing the driver says there was no violence.

Michael Madill with Coast Mountain says two different stories are emerging.

“Sounds like it was an unfortunate situation that happened at Lougheed but as I said we don’t have all the facts so we’ll continue gathering the facts and then we’ll respond accordingly,” he explains. “I think what you’ve probably seen is some points of view from people who were interviewed by news media but I don’t think you will have seen the full picture at this point.”

Burnaby RCMP are also investigating.

Medill says all drivers go through extensive training on how to handle all types of situations.
