Nearly 100mm of rain expected in parts of the South Coast today

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The latest system in the series of storms that’s been slamming the south coast since Monday is now dumping even more rain on Metro Vancouver.

“I think we’ll set some rainfall records and some temperature records,” says Meteorologist Russ Lacate.

“It’s not quite the final storm,” says Meteorologist Russ Lacate. “We’re talking about tomorrow’s system not having quite as big a punch in terms of the wind, but it will certainly bring a lot of rain once again.”

“Today’s storm has easterly winds over the southern sections of Georgia Strait, topping out at about 60km/h. Yesterday, they were about 78km/h [in the morning]. So [it is] marginally weaker,” he adds.

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning. Winds up to 90km/hr are expected today.

“The rain will be heavy at times; it comes ashore in pulses throughout the day, with about 25mm in the city, 50mm up against the local mountains, and near 100mm expected for the South Coast range, heading up through Sea to Sky country through Squamish.”

Russ expects rain throughout tomorrow afternoon, but he says it doesn’t look too stormy. Things should start to dry off during the day on Friday.
