SURREY (NEWS1130) – A mother accused of killing her eight-year-old daughter last month will stand trial for murder.
Lisa Batstone is accused of second-degree murder in Teagan’s death.
Teagan was found dead in the trunk of a car crashed into a ditch on 35A Avenue in early December.
While a psychiatrist has found Batstone fit to stand trial, she remains certified under the Mental Health Act. That means she will spend her time in a forensic psychiatric hospital rather than a conventional remand facility, as she awaits trial.
In court today, Batstone waved to her family behind the glass today in court, and then covered her mouth; she sobbed for the rest of her appearance before a judge. Her lawyer says she is depressed.
Following Batstone’s appearance, her father Barry Hamilton told reporters he’s relieved to see his daughter receiving support. He spoke of a mental illness in the family, even saying he himself was recently diagnosed as bipolar.
The South Surrey woman is set to return to court on January 26th.
