Local students add new chapter to Encyclopedia of AIDS

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Two SFU students are doing their part to build up the knowledge base around HIV/AIDS, contributing a chapter to the Encyclopedia of AIDS.

The Encyclopedia is a reference tool for researchers looking into new treatments and possible vaccines for the illness.

“What we hope that this review chapter does is combine all the current and past literature and basically get a sense of what has been published out there and how we can use this information to guide future research,” says health sciences student Anh Le.

The chapter written by Le and Aniqa Shahid explores how HIV-1 mutates to adapt to the immune system of those infected.

“It’s meant to allow researchers in the current field of HIV and also those who are interested from outside of HIV to get an overview of the topic in general,” explains Le.

Le says understanding the way in which the virus mutates could be crucial to eventually developing a vaccine.
