ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – An Abbotsford firefighter has been air-lifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

He was hurt while battling a fire in his own garage.

Police say it appears there was an explosion at the home on Harris Road near Bates, but haven’t released many other details.

There are reports the firefighter may have suffered burns to his hands.

Constable Ian MacDonald says major crime detectives and the forensic identification unit have been called in.

“I don’t know if it was necessarily suspicious. But your best opportunity to investigate is the first opportunity. I would suggest it’s more of a precaution at this point. But obviously, we will go where the evidence leads us,” he tells us.

There was one other person on the property at the time, but they weren’t hurt.
