Expect closures, delays on the Georgia Viaduct starting Sunday

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – City engineers will be watching very closely when the Georgia Viaduct partially shuts down for a number of days, starting tomorrow.

It’s all for the filming of a big budget Hollywood movie.

“Hey, Vancouver, it’s Ryan Reynolds and I’m really happy to be in my hometown filming Deadpool for 20th Century Fox,” said a recorded statement from the local actor issued this week, thanking the city for its patience as the Georgia Viaduct is used for an action sequence.

“You might just run into us shooting around town so on behalf of the production and myself, I want to thank the city for allowing us to shoot in beautiful Vancouver, one of the most amazing film production locations in the entire world,” Reynolds adds.

Councillor Geoff Meggs says the film crews are being welcomed with open arms. “What I’ve been hearing is very positive — people comfortable with the idea that given the jobs and the investment coming with this film shoot that it’s worth it.”

He adds that while the engineering department will be monitoring traffic closely, he stresses this isn’t a true test of life without the viaducts.

“It’s not a direct comparison at all because the plan, if council approves it, would be to replace the viaducts with an improved road network and a bigger park,” he explains.

Meggs says council expects a pair of reports before the summer that could determine the future of the aging structures.

The Georgia Viaduct will be closed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow.

From April 6th to April 16th, it will be closed from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. After the road re-opens at 3 p.m., a 100-metre section of the viaduct will remain limited to one lane.

On Saturday April 11th, the viaduct will be closed from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There is also the possibility of more closures or delays on Sunday April 12th, Friday April 17th, and Saturday April 18th.
