Is there an appetite to turn Metro Vancouver into a mega-city?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We want change, but does that necessarily mean amalgamation? A new Angus Reid survey is looking at whether we are ready to amalgamate the 24 local governments in our region.

Nearly three-quarters of those asked by Angus Reid say they’d like to see at least one fewer municipality.

Shachi Kurl with the pollster breaks down the numbers. “About a quarter say leave things as they are, with the 24 municipalities that we do have, and the rest all pick a number that is less than 24, so it shows that there is some appetite to see some amount of amalgamating or combining.”

Kurl notes the answer depends where you live. “People living outside the City of Vancouver are more inclined to say, ‘No, we’d like to hang on to our local municipalities, thank you very much.’ [Whereas], people living within the City of Vancouver are more open to the idea.”

The problem is, as Kurl sees it, is that we can’t seem to agree on what that final number of municipalities should be.
