Protest at the Ross Street Temple in South Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Police are monitoring a growing protest at the Ross Street Temple in Vancouver ahead of a visit by Stephen Harper and the prime minister of India.

People have been honking their horns and chanting at the corner of SW Marine Drive and Ross Street.

Over the noon hour, there were a few dozen protesters in the area and almost the same number of police officers, trying to keep the peace. Police have been moving protesters off the road and to two corners of the intersection.

Half the protesters are demonstrating against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over a number of human rights accusations that have surfaced in the last decades. Others are protesting against Stephen Harper for Bill C-51.

The two PMs are scheduled to arrive this afternoon.

Demonstrations are also expected this afternoon in the Newton area of Surrey.
