Six-year-old girl killed, mother badly hurt in Port Coquitlam crash

PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – A terrible accident has claimed the life of a six-year-old girl in Port Coquitlam.

RCMP say the little girl and her mother were walking on a sidewalk near the corner of Shaughnessy Street and Lougheed Highway yesterday when a small CRV lost control and hit them.

Police say the driver was going south on Shaughnessy and tried to turn right onto Lions Way near the park.

Corporal Jamie Chung says the driver is in shock. “She stayed at the scene and she is cooperating with us. It is too early to speculate any charges and that is why we are asking more witnesses to come forward at his point.”

“For some reason this CRV lost control and then it went onto the sidewalk and collided with four pedestrians,” he adds.

The girl passed away this morning and her mom is in serious condition.

This happened near the very busy intersection of Shaughnessy and Lougheed so the hope is there are other new witnesses who can help explain how this could happen.
