Summer will bring busiest construction season in Vancouver since 2010 Olympics

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Summer is just over a month away and with it will come one of the busier construction seasons we’ve seen in a while.

The City of Vancouver says its schedule is probably the fullest it’s been since the lead up to the Olympics.

Vancouver’s Director of Transportation Jerry Dobrovolny says drivers will notice a lot of lanes blocked off. “The development activity is up at record levels and the overall construction is at the upper end of our work. I think in the run up to the Olympics, we had some additional construction volumes beyond this, but it’s on the upper quarter of our spectrum in terms of construction activity. So it’s high, but it’s not the highest we’ve ever done.”

He says they’ll try and make things as painless as possible, but there will be hold ups. “We ensure that we don’t have work taking place that’s disrupting both Burrard Bridge and Granville Bridge at the same time. If we have events, special events, we won’t plan a special event or a run that’s using both of those bridges at the same time.”

Summer is the time construction projects get going across Metro Vancouver. A lot of these projects involve paving, something President of the BC Road Builders Association says isn’t done in winter. “We’re not able to pave when the temperatures get too low or when there’s too much moisture.”

This is all in addition to Evergreen Line construction which is still happening in Coquitlam and Port Moody.
