Vancouver-based The Flag Shop stops sale of Confederate flag after Charleston tragedy

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You won’t be able to buy a Confederate flag at any of The Flag Shop chains across the country. The Vancouver-based company has stopped the sale of the controversial flag after the mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.

“Right now this flag represents hate and racism,” says owner Susan Braverman.

She’s seen how the flag has been used lately by white supremacists all over traditional and social media.

Although it was a tough decision to make because she values the flag’s historical significance, keeping it made her “sick to her stomach.”

“The reason we’ve done this is because it is now the Confederate flag is being used as a symbol of hate and racism and that part I do not want to encourage and support. I don’t want to be carrying it at this moment; I definitely don’t want it to be made available to the public.”

She says she’s banned online and in-store sales, removed displays, as well as cancelled production of the flags because of how it was used in social media in reaction to the tragedy.

She realizes schools, film crews and museums may need it for its historical significance and so she’s working out details on how to make them available.
