More firefighters called in to battle central Vancouver Island wildfire

LADYSMITH (NEWS 1130) – Firefighters on central Vancouver Island are attacking a wildfire that is threatening homes and livestock.

The four-hectare fire is burning south of Nanaimo, and the province’s Wildfire Service says it received a request for assistance early Thursday evening.

Fire Information Officer Marg Drysdale says 10 firefighters, two helicopters and two officers were called in during the evening to assist an initial three-person attack crew battling the flames that were burning near homes.

Mary Marcotte who represents the area on the Cowichan Valley Regional District says municipal firefighters have also been battling the flames and an emergency-preparedness co-ordinator was travelling up from Duncan.

She could not confirm evacuations but says she has seen trailers leaving the area with livestock.

Marcotte says she can see haze in the air and notes people who drive by the area can smell the smoke.
