LNG project agreement bill passes at the Legislature

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – The controversial Liquefied Natural Gas Project Agreements Act was passed at the Legislature today.

The bill provides the legislative authority for the government to enter into Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project agreements with groups like Pacific NorthWest LNG.

The governing Liberals believe the $6 billion investment will create thousands of jobs.

“Liquefied natural gas represents an extraordinary opportunity for people throughout the province,” says Premier Christy Clark in a release. “This legislation sets the stage for building a clean, competitive new industry that gives British Columbians a fair share of the benefits – thousands of jobs, new connections for small and medium businesses, and new revenue to benefit B.C. for years to come.”

This opens the door for the biggest private sector capital investment in BC’s history.

The NDP and the Greens voted against the bill, claiming environmental irresponsibility and overestimated job creation as factors in their decisions.
