Vancouver councillor calling for more consultation ahead of vote on Burrard Bridge planned upgrades

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Why weren’t people told ahead of time? That’s the question raised by one NPA councillor in relation to the addition of suicide barriers as part of the proposed upgrades for the Burrard Bridge.

Elizabeth Ball says the letters of opposition she’s received stack up to her knees, more than a hundred of them, many from people wondering why they weren’t warned about the changes in the plan.

“People are questioning whether or not that will really make a difference in terms of people’s lives, but every one of them expressed that money could be used to prevent people wanting to kill themselves.”

She says she can’t move forward on supporting the proposal without more consultation.

“We will be obviously discussing consultation, what is necessary in terms of consultation, before one moves forward with a change like this, which is quite dramatic.”

Council is expected to vote on the $35 million plan on Wednesday.
