City of Vancouver hopes to get bike sharing program up and running

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Earlier this week the bike lanes on the Burrard Street Bridge hit a major milestone — the city says the one millionth cyclist crossed. The separated lanes have always been a contentious issue around these parts and there is hope a bike share program will soon be set up.
It was supposed to happen a while ago, but the company that won the contract went bankrupt.
Lon LaClaire, the city’s Acting Director of Transportation, says they’re now taking new proposals to get the program rolling and he says this is just one part of the Vancouver’s Healthy City Strategy. “To better understand what the barriers are for people cycling now and that will help improve our understanding what the potential market is but also help us target our promotion efforts better.”
He says the idea behind the program is to encourage people to get out of their cars and bike instead, and they’ll have that option without having to buy one.”One of the reasons people don’t bike is because they haven’t really tried it and when they try it they do find that it’s often the fastest way of getting from point A to point B in the city and in particular in the downtown core area.”
He doesn’t know how much the program will cost or when it may be in place.
The city is reviewing contract proposals until mid-September.
