Innocent senior shot to death in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – An absolute tragedy, a worst case scenario: that’s what Abbotsford Police are calling an incident in which an innocent bystander was shot to death Wednesday night.

Constable Ian MacDonald says officers were responding to a call of shots fired on Promontory Court, near Blueridge and Ridgeview Drives, when they found a vehicle in a driveway had been hit by several rounds.

“As we started to widen our search, we located a 74-year-old-man on the neighbouring property who had been struck. We called for the ambulance crew to move in but he died at the scene.”

MacDonald tells us it appears the man was just standing by a fence when a targeted shooting happened in the adjacent driveway. He says several homes in the area have security cameras so it’s hoped that footage will help with a suspect description.

Many people in that city are hearing about the deadly shooting for the first time this morning. We spoke with one man who believes this is just an extension of the ongoing gun violence in Metro Vancouver.

“This shooting thing is getting out of hand. There are too many people who have nothing to do with it who are just being thrown into the mix. I worry every time I go out.”

He says he doesn’t feel safe. “I feel like I won’t talk to anybody if I don’t know who I’m looking at. I’m a pretty good reader of people. And people surprise me every day.”

While he says the police department will do its best, he worries that may not be enough to stop a surge in violent crime, should one erupt after this shooting.

The victim’s name has not been released.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is taking over the case. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the IHIT Tip Line at 1-877-551-4448 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
