How does our healthcare system deal with an aging population?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The BC Care Providers Association is out with a report trying to help the BC healthcare system deal with a rapidly aging population.
One of their suggestions is to turn care homes into care hubs by adding staff and resources to care homes.
Daniel Fontaine is the organization’s CEO he suggests one per cent of the acute care budget put towards this.
He sees this as an investment that could actually save money.
“In the province of BC, depending on which report you look at, the cost of an acute care bed can range anywhere from as low as $800 to up to $2,000 dollars per day. Compare that to a residential care bed that is roughly $200 [per day].”
He says by doing this, we would free up beds and resources to use elsewhere.
“We’d actually free up beds and free up the opportunity for those acute facilities to do things that the rest of the community is asking for, like hip and knee surgeries and other acute care procedures.”
