BC Ferries extends free reservation pilot project on one route

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It seems we could be getting even closer to a free reservation system on BC Ferries for foot passengers and drivers. The reservation pilot project for the Tsawwassen to Southern Gulf Islands is being extended because it’s been so successful.

Ideally this would be done on all routes according to Darren Gannett with BC Ferries. “It goes to make sense that if we can help people plan, have certainty and have a reservation, there [will be] fewer people waiting at terminals. It is more efficient for loading.”

“Ideally it is most efficient to know exactly how many people are coming on what sailing on what time of day on every route. Our current system isn’t able to do that for a variety of reasons. We certainly are trying to find the most efficient system for us and frankly most convenient for the customers,” he explains.

Gannett adds this system would benefit the major routes by far because they have the highest number of passengers.

The corporation understands not everyone can plan ahead and a system will still be in place for last minute travellers.
