Power surge behind temporary shutdown of the Expo Line SkyTrain: TransLink

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We now know what caused a temporary shutdown of the Expo Line SkyTrain last night, which left hundreds of people stranded.

Anne Drennan with TransLink says a power surge affected 19 trains — but they don’t know what caused it.”There was a power spike or a power surge on the Expo Line that affected the train control computers between Waterfront and King George. The trains had to be manually recovered and then manually re-entered into the computer. This was obviously done as quickly as possible,” she adds.

Drennan understands people are frustrated but says their service is usually very reliable. “For a very large transit system it doesn’t happen all that often. It’s always as far as we are concerned, a huge issue. When it does happen, we try and get it running as quickly as possible but it actually doesn’t happen all that often on this system.”

Service was down for nearly three hours, which also affected fans heading downtown for the Canucks game.
