Whitecaps and Timbers open playoff match-up with a goalless draw

PORTLAND, OR (NEWS 1130) – David Ousted made six stops, with four of them coming in the second half, as the Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers tied 0-0 in the first leg of their MLS Western Conference semifinal.

Ousted had to be very sharp in the second half to preserve the result for Vancouver. His best save came in the 71st minute, as he dove to his left to turn aside a Diego Valeri free kick that appeared to be curling just inside the post. Ousted got a bit of help as well, as he was beaten on a shot by Maximiliano Urruti in the 89th minute, but the shot hit the post and was cleared away.

The Whitecaps registered just three shots on target, with two of them coming off the foot of Kekuta Manneh.

Each team had one player booked in the late stages of the first half due to unsporting behaviour. Lucas Melano was shown a yellow card for Portland, while Vancouver’s Gershon Koffie also received a yellow card.

Vancouver will host its first Major League Soccer post-season game next Sunday when the teams square off in the second leg at BC Place.
