North Van could be first in Canada to require warning stickers at gas pumps

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You can soon have your say about the possibility of new warning stickers being required on gas pumps in North Vancouver.
A public hearing is set to take place in North Van on Monday.
If the city goes on to craft a bylaw, it would be the first city in Canada to do so.
Earlier this year, West Vancouver voted to endorse the stickers, and Port Moody is studying them. Burnaby decided not to support the idea.
But the City of North Vancouver would be taking the lead as far as making the labels a requirement.
The purpose of the warning stickers is to let drivers know that use of the gasoline contributes to global warming.
Rob Shirkey with Our Horizon, the organization behind the campaign, says they’re similar to tobacco warning labels, which Canada pioneered.
“It was actually Canada in 2001 that became the first jurisdiction in the world to require the pictures on tobacco packages. Since then, 76 countries around the world adopted that innovation.”
He says by targeting cities, the campaign is making much more headway than simply lobbying companies.
“We tried to reach out to industry. For the most part, they don’t reply, which is unfortunate. I’d like to have that conversation with them. My suspicion is that they wouldn’t go for it.”
The public hearing begins at 6:30 p.m. at council chambers.
