Air quality advisory issued for parts of Metro Vancouver

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An air quality warning has been issued for Langley, Surrey, Richmond, New Westminster, Pitt Meadows and Delta.

Julie Saxton with Metro Vancouver says air quality has suffered because of the number of homes that have fired up wood stoves and fireplaces to beat the frigid temperatures. “We tend to see these things occurring when the weather is cold when we have these very still conditions and it’s very variable it’s not necessarily the entire region.”

Saxton notes there are ways to reduce the smoke coming out of your chimney. “Burning clean and seasoned woods so that is wood that has been dried for a period. Cleaner fires tend to be the small and hot fires it’s best to avoid smoldering which tends to be very smoky.”

She adds people with diabetes, lung or heart disease should avoid any outdoor activities for the time being.

Metro Vancouver is reminding homeowners to get their chimneys inspected regularly, and build only small fires.
