BCLC warns of scratch and wins as stocking stuffer for kids

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The BC Lottery Corporation is running ads aimed at parents who give scratch-and-win tickets to their kids.

The commercials are part of a larger program organized by the National Council of Problem Gambling and Mcgill University’s Holiday Lottery Campaign.

With over 35% of BC parents admitting to giving their under-19 children lottery tickets, Dr. Kahlil Philander with the BCLC says people need to be aware of the issues surrounding gambling at a young age.

“Some of this is thought to be related to neurological development, and actually what we know is that for the average problem gambler, they started gambling at the age of ten”, says Philander.

He adds that with children now more likely to gamble than drink or smoke, parents should be talking to them about the risks and having the conversation.
