Parents group delivers written demand for more public school funding to premier’s office

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Upset over what it says is insufficient funding for the province’s public schools, a parents group has delivered letters and postcards from more than 1,500 moms and dads to the premier.
Adequate cash for school districts to improve facilities and adjusted funding to acknowledge that the costs of education have gone up are among the written demands from the Parents Advocacy Network for Public Education.
“There’s not enough money to go around,” says Andrea Sinclair with the group. “Parents are paying more. The PACs are raising more. The parents are giving more in addition to what the PACs are raising. Things are being cut. Different programs they have, they’re cancelling them — they’re pulling them out.”
Catherine Shaw was with the group as it delivered its message to the premier’s office; she wants kids to get more than just the basics.
“Every year, parents are trying to fight to save the music program, it seems,” says Shaw. “We were just part of a movement to save it for the third time. This is getting ridiculous.”
The group suggests using some of the province’s $277-million surplus from the last budget to put toward education.
