Canucks go two for two on their road trip

GLENDALE, AZ (NEWS 1130) – Jake Virtanen and Jannik Hansen scored the goals as the Vancouver Canucks made it two wins in two nights with a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes at the Gila River Arena.

The Canucks were coming off a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night. Alex Edler and Brandon Sutter were injured in that win, so they were not in the line-up, while Derek Dorsett sat with an illness.

A pair of Canucks rookies combined to open the scoring 6:27 into the first period. Jared McCann held up after crossing the blueline and then fed Jake Virtanen for a one-timer that beat Louis Domingue. It was Virtanen’s third goal of the season.

Arizona levelled the score on a powerplay early in the second period. Max Domi caught Ryan Miller out of position with a pass to Martin Hanzal and he fired home his seventh goal of the season. The Canucks got the goal back before the period was up though. Jannik Hansen’s shot hit two Coyotes players on the way in, giving Hansen his 16th goal of the season, which matches his career-high.

Miller stepped up to help protect the one-goal lead, as he made 12 of his 33 saves in the third period and improved to 9-1 versus the Coyotes in his career. He also got some help with just under four minutes to play, as defenseman Alex Biega used his stick to clear a Coyotes shot off the goal-line with Miller beaten.

The Canucks now return to Vancouver for a three-game homestand that kicks off on Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
