TORONTO, ON. (NEWS 1130) – Is today’s increasingly-digital world leading us down the road to teacherless classrooms? That idea is on the table at an education forum in Toronto today.
The idea is the expanding digital age will make a teacher in every classroom obsolete, replaced by recorded lessons, even YouTube.
But Charles Ungerleider with UBC’s Department of Educational Studies isn’t so sure it will ever become a reality.
“I think it’s an idea that was dreamed up by somebody who has never spent very much time in a classroom.”
He adds teachers play a huge role in development, above and beyond academics which can’t be replaced.
“The process of education is a process of socialization to teach people who to live in community and to have it regulated, essentially, by a wise adult. Every teacher knows what he or she does every day would be impossible to replace with a machine.”
