VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A new local transportation app gets you to work while you make a new friend.
Spare Rides connects riders with drivers who are heading the same way and have an extra seat.
CEO Kristoffer Vik Hansen says his company is very different from UBER since charging 50 cents a kilometre is below the vehicle’s operating cost.
“Basically a way to fill your spare seats with a new adventure and a new friend. This is more for bringing carpooling into the 21st century. It’s not meant as a tax service.”
It costs 50 cents per kilometre for the rider, with the driver getting 70 per cent of that.
“It’s much more fun to have that social interaction you get when you go places with your own friends. So why can’t we replicate that on an everyday level. You meet people, you make connections and you basically just have a happier day.”
The service is launching this week – focusing on the UBC- Broadway Corridor to start.
