UBC study finds the number of friends you have is important to babies

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Babies as young as six months old use group size as a cue to determine who will be a leader and they are aware having an alliance is an important part of being a good social member.

Anthea Pun with UBC explains even though infants have never really been exposed to much social context beyond their families, within half a year they are prepared to think about these relationships.

“Even if you are not the largest individual in the group you can still be a stronger member of the group when you have more people to back you up, especially in a competitive scenario, when you are trying to get resources or territory that belongs to you.”

She adds this is important for babies to understand because they are vulnerable and rely on the protection of others.
