Richmond RCMP share distracted driver’s previous infractions

By

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – RCMP in Richmond are still baffled after finding out a woman who almost smashed into a police cruiser already had at least a dozen distracted driving convictions.

Mounties in that city tweeted a photo of the driver’s past infractions.

There isn’t one concrete solution on how to fix this seemingly systemic problem, but Karen Bowman with Drop it and Drive strongly feels better deterrents could be in place.

One thing that might help is heaftier fines.

“I think the fine should start at a minimum $500 and I think it should double every time, along with demerits,” she tells us.

“I don’t know what the right cut-off is, but way sooner than 12 convictions. I think their licence should be suspended. The consequences [should] go up from there.”

Think getting into a crash because of distracted driving will never happen to you? Bowman has a question for you:

“Am I prepared to live with the consequences if I do it to somebody else? Even if you don’t think you’re ever going to cause a crash, are you really willing to live with what could happen… if you end up injuring or harming someone else because of your choices behind the wheel? You are driving a weapon.”

She knows this problem will never be solved, but feels having conversations with friends and family is a good place to start.
