Hundreds show up at NDP town hall to talk about housing

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – “Something needs to be done.” Around 750 people showed up at a town hall tonight to send that message to the BC Liberals.

Jim is one of the hundreds who showed up to the NDP event.

He says the BC Liberals haven’t done anything to stop the housing crisis.

“They basically refuse to acknowledge that a problem exists,” he says. “The BC Liberals haven’t done a damn thing.”

While Krishna is livid that people are unable to even hope to enter the market.

“It’s not right that I hire people to work for me and those people working for me can’t afford to buy a place. It’s not right that my nephew standing here with me doesn’t have a hope in hell of buying a place.”

He hopes come election time people remember events like this.

“They (the NDP) are the ones holding this event, not the government that’s in power. That speaks volumes.”

Vancouver Quadra MP Joyce Murray says she has heard from many constituents that something needs to be done by the three levels of government.

“It’s not really for me to tell the province or the city what to do. Certainly, the city has been putting forward some proposals, academics out of UBC have been putting forward proposals.”

She says more data needs to be collected before a clear strategy from the federal government can be given.

“I don’t think we have enough understanding of all of the elements to this situation to be jumping into solutions yet.”
