Canucks fall to the Oilers for their third straight loss

EDMONTON, AB (NEWS 1130) – Cam Talbot turned aside all 40 Canucks’ shots, while Jordan Eberle and Matt Hendricks had goals as the Edmonton Oilers shutout Vancouver 2-0 on Friday night.

Vancouver has now lost three games in a row, after wrapping up a four-game homestand with losses to Winnipeg and Colorado.

The Canucks thought they had opened the scoring on a Brendan Gaunce rush early in the second period. Gaunce was taken down by Oilers blueliner Darnell Nurse while going hard to the net, and the rebound from his original shot hit him and went in past Talbot. The goal was waved off though, and video review showed that the puck hit Gaunce in the hand, so the call on the ice stood.

Just past the midway mark, the Oilers got on the board first. Connor McDavid picked off a Dan Hamhuis outlet pass and then fed the puck over to Jordan Eberle who beat Jacob Markstrom five-hole for his 22nd goal of the season.

Edmonton doubled its lead 6:03 into the third period. Jordan Oesterle’s shot from the point was turned aside by Markstrom, but Matt Hendricks got enough of the rebound to get it through the Canucks’ goalie and in to make it 2-0.

Markstrom had 23 saves in the defeat as the Canucks outshot Edmonton 40-25. Alex Burrows and Bo Horvat led the way for Vancouver with five shots on goal each.

The Canucks will return home to host the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.
