We believe women: rally in front of CBC ahead of Ghomeshi verdict

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A few dozen protesters stood in the rain in front of the CBC building in Vancouver ahead of the Jian Ghomeshi verdict tomorrow.

This fight is about more than just the now infamous former radio host. While this case is in the public spotlight now, Jacquie says it’s a problem deeply rooted in our society.

“It has been going on for years, and years, and years, decades. This is so frustrating to be out in the rain protesting what my mother protested before me.”

She says this has sparked a conversation and progress could be made, but Bianca believes this talk about violence and women needs to keep going.

“We need to have it every single day. I don’t know why people aren’t talking about it every single day, because it’s happening to women every single day,” she says. “Men have been doing this to us for a long time, and yet it still takes so many women to come forward before anyone will believe that a man is a rapist or that a man is a violent guy.”

Mave hopes the tone of the conversation around sexual violence against women is changing.

“In some ways, I think that this trial will help women come forward. Because the women who did come forward were so brave and all of the women here believe them.”
