Slumping loonie hitting mail services hard

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Have you reduced the amount of stuff you buy online from the States?

It has been a rough run for mail services like Hagen’s of Blaine, just across the border, as our dollar has continued to sit well below par.

“Definitely slower,” says owner Steve Hagen. “My understanding is that traffic coming across the border has slowed a little bit, not a lot. I think just purchasing though has. My customers typically get five packages, they get two now.”

This year, the loonie hit a low of 68 US cents in January but has risen steadily since then.

“From customers I’ve spoken with, when it’s 80 cents or above, they usually purchase,” says Hagen of his Canadian customers. “When it’s 85 cents or higher they really don’t even think about it — it’s when it’s under the 80 mark, they question whether to purchase all items.”

Some good news for him, though, with the dollar creeping up, he’s seen a slight uptick in recent weeks.
