VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – How often do you look to cut corners at the grocery store?
It turns out many Canadians are making cheaper choices to deal with rising food costs.
A national poll finds more than half of us (57%) say it has become tougher to afford to feed our families in the last year — regardless of household income.
The Angus Reid survey finds that as a result, almost three quarters (71%) are compromising by switching to cheaper brands. For 40 per cent of us, that means making some unhealthy choices.
The survey also finds people are cutting back on meat and other pricier items, as well as trips to restaurants, to compensate.
Just over half of us are delaying a major purchase like an appliance because of the cost of food.
Two in three Canadians (63%) believe the issue is not getting enough attention from Canada’s leaders, with more than half (53%) saying the issue is “one of the most important” facing the country.
