Candlelight memorial in Vancouver to remember those lost to HIV/AIDS

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Although there have been huge medical strides in treating HIV and AIDS over the last few decades, tens of millions of people around the world are still dealing with the illness.

If you’ve lost someone, you have a chance to remember them this evening.

An annual candlelight memorial is being held at Alexandra Park in Vancouver.

“We basically come and celebrate people who we know personally who have passed on and just come together and be with each other for that one hour,” says Dr. Brian Chittock, Executive Director of AIDS Vancouver.

He says the level of awareness about the disease isn’t where he would like it to be. “Unfortunately the younger generation, they didn’t live through the AIDS epidemic that some of us older guys did. And so they never saw the people dying.”

Chittock says educating people about prevention is extremely important.

The memorial gets underway at 8:00 p.m.
