Hot Metro Vancouver temperatures prompt warning

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A major shift in temperatures around the province today is leading to a mini heat wave, but the weather could be problematic for some people.

When the temperature climbs into the mid-30s it means you need to be a little more careful if you plan on being in the sun.

Dr. Victoria Lee is the Chief Medical Health Officer for the Fraser Health Authority and she says there are some very simple things you can do to keep yourself safe. Lee explains it’s incredibly important to stay hydrated.

“Some people mistakenly think that any kind of fluid is good for hydrating your body, but alcohol actually takes hydration away. So you actually require even more water to keep yourself hydrated when you have alcohol intake.”

Lee says this weather can be especially tricky for children and the elderly. “And people with heart disease or respiratory conditions. Sometimes people who have mobility issues or are on certain medications have to be careful as well.”

She suggests spending some time indoors in cool locations like at the mall or a community centre, but if you insist on being outside try not to wear short sleeves or shorts. “You need to ensure you have the appropriate sun protection whether it’s light clothing [like linen] as well as sunblock.”

Symptoms of a heat-related illness include: vomiting, feeling flushed, increase heart rate and rapid breathing.

Doctors say if you know someone who is living alone, it’s also a good idea to check up on them.
