“We can do better” supporting sexual assault victims: Clark, but no new funding

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – A day after the premier shockingly revealed a man tried to sexually assault her when she was a child, there’s no firm answer about whether she will increase funding to support victims.

Premier Christy Clark points to the Green Party bill and her support for it, which will put clear guidelines in place for dealing with sexual assault on campuses.

“We spend about 70 million dollars every year on this kind of support for female victims of violence. There’s going to be more we can do, for sure, but it’s one step at a time,” explains the Premier.

But will victim support groups get more money?

“Well I think 70 million dollars a year is a lot of money. Are there ways we could spend more, or spend that money better? Probably. And we’re going to continue to look at all of that,” says Clark.

Clark says the most important thing is changing the conversation on sexual assault and ensuring victims feel they will be supported if they come forward.
